WHY ROSES HAVE THORNS
“Why Roses Have Thorns” is an original dark fairytale by Portland-based author Montgomery Mahaffey. Set in a beautiful garden created by a generous king, the story warns against the dangers of vanity and corruption.
Inspired by the Golden Age of Illustration and the beauty of the natural world, I wanted to create a universe that enveloped the reader in rich, detailed fantasy and texture. Other influences include Audrey Beardsley’s sinuous linework and the stylizations of Gothic and Fin-de-Siècle art and architecture.
